Few places in Europe stop travellers in their tracks like the Church of St. John the Theologian at Kaneo. Built in the 13th century on a rocky promontory above the old fishing village of Kaneo, this small Byzantine church watches over the deep blue water of Lake Ohrid, with the mountains of Albania rising on the far shore.
Its bands of red brick and pale stone, its cross-in-square plan and its dome make it a masterpiece of Orthodox architecture, and fragments of the original frescoes survive inside. But what makes people fall in love with Kaneo is the setting: a church that seems to float between sky and water.
If you visit Kaneo only once, make it count. Come at sunrise for silence, or at golden hour when the stone glows and the whole lake turns to light.

The same church looks like a different place every few hours. Choose your moment and plan your visit around the light.
Empty paths, glass-still water and soft pastel light. The quietest Kaneo you will ever see.
Ideal for a private proposalThe sun lights up the turquoise shallows below the cliff. Paths are busiest, the water is at its clearest.
Ideal for a cruise and a swimThe low sun turns the brick walls copper and the lake to gold. The view everyone comes for.
Ideal for couple photoshootsThe old town lights up behind you and the lake goes deep blue. Calm, cool and unforgettable.
